A 38-year-old woman was taken into custody after holding a gun to her head in a church in Milpitas Saturday night, according to police.

The woman, a Fremont resident, began holding a handgun to her own head at about 8:15 p.m. while inside St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church, located  in the 700 block of Sequoia Drive, Milpitas police said.

After receiving calls about the incident, police officers responded and evacuated the church and surrounding area.

The officers contacted the distraught woman, who continued to hold the gun to her head. The officers spoke to her for nearly two hours before  she surrendered, according to police.

The woman was taken into custody and taken to an area hospital for a mental health evaluation, police said.

No one else in the church was threatened or injured during the incident.
