NorCal Residents Still Testing for Fukushima Radiation

The beaches are safe -- but not according to a group with Geiger counters.

Fukushima is here.

They're convinced of it.

"They" are people like John Bertucci of Petaluma, who carry around Geiger counters and constantly test what the government has told them about nuclear radiation, according to Al Jazeera.

Bertucci and others began Fukushima Response with six people in a Petaluma coffee shop, the Web site reported, and now have enough followers to put together the "FUKUSHIMA IS HERE" human mural on Ocean Beach last fall.

They're united behind their conviction that the Environmental Protection Agency isn't doing enough to keep them safe and to check the air, soil and water for radiation from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station, which melted down nearly three years ago.

The EPA acknowledged that 20 percent of its radiation monitors weren't working after Fukushima. California has 11 monitors.

Experts say that small amounts of fallout may reach California in the future, but for now, fish is safe to eat.

The problem, skeptics say, is that starfish and sea lions are dying in unprecedented numbers -- and that no government program regularly tests the water.

So they'll keep their Geiger counters for now.
