Downtown San Rafael Gets “Cigarette Meter”

Receptacle will gauge how many cigarette butts are disposed of.

A penny for your butt. Cigarette butt, that is.

A "cigarette meter eater" will be installed Thursday at the San Rafael City Plaza, according to the Marin Independent Journal. The "meter" is a trash receptacle that will record how many cigarette butts are disposed. For each butt properly thrown in, the St. Vincent de Paul Society will receive a penny.

If there are 100,000 cigarettes thrown away, local businesses will contribute $1,000, according to the report.

The San Rafael Clean Coalition is behind the effort.
