Driver Dies on I-680 in San Jose

A driver of a Toyota pickup died early Tuesday after the truck smashed into a tree and burst into flames on Interstate 680 in San Jose.

A driver of a Toyota pickup died early Tuesday after the truck smashed into a tree and burst into flames on Interstate 680 in San Jose, according to the  California Highway Patrol.

CHP Officer Kevin Bartlett said the gender of the driver is unclear at this point. The fire damage after the crash was severe. The accident was reported at 12:36 a.m. on I-680 near Capitol Expressway. The driver died at the scene.

Bartlett said the crash cleared two hours later, but the reason for the accident is still being investigated.

NBC Bay Area was there afterward and has video of the sign that the truck knocked out.
