Earth Day All About Oakland Parks

City parks will see much love during 41st annual Earth Day.

Neighbors are tackling projects big and small this weekend all over Oakland, with a special emphasis on the city's parks.

Mayor Jean Quan announced there are 80 project locations for volunteers to choose from. Some are small, single-block efforts, while others will attract hundreds of participants.

Earth Day, she says, is Oakland's largest community volunteer event, with as many as 4,000 corporate and neighborhood volunteers working together to clean and beautify parks, public areas and schools.

The oldest event, Friends of Sausal Creek, is one of Quan's pet projects because it stems from her home district at Dimond Park.

The Rose Garden and Lake Merritt will get loads of attention, too.
