A Muni bus struck and injured an elderly woman at the southern end of Lake Merced Saturday afternoon, according to a spokesman.

The outbound No. 18 46th Avenue bus struck a pedestrian shortly before 4:30 p.m. at Lake Merced Boulevard and John Muir Drive, according to Muni spokesman Paul Rose.

The pedestrian was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

The bus operator will undergo drug and alcohol testing, as is standard for such incidents, Rose said.

Muni service has not been affected by the collision.
