Elon Musk Sleeps at Tesla Factory ‘Quite Frequently' to Make Sure Production Goals Are Met

If you’re ever wondering where the CEO of Tesla is in the middle of the night, he’s most likely sleeping — inside the Tesla factory.

To ensure that all production targets are being met — Tesla hopes to produce 500,000 cars a year by 2018 — Musk has a sleeping bag in a conference room right next to where the cars are being manufactured.

"I'm personally spending an enormous amount of time on the production line," the billionaire tech icon said to analysts over a conference call after Tesla released its first quarter earnings results last week, Mashable reported.

Old habits die hard, because this isn’t the first time the ambitious exec calls his workplace a second home.

"Almost every day, I'd come in at seven thirty or eight a.m., and he'd be asleep right there on that bag," one former colleague recalled. "Maybe he showered on the weekends, I don't know."

Tesla held a job fair over the weekend to fill hundreds of positions at its Fremont factory following skyrocketing demand for its high-priced, eco-friendly cars.

But skeptics question whether Tesla can meet customer demand. So far, sales for its Model S has been strong, the Model X is still something of a question mark, and orders for the Model 3 were through the roof .
