Families Drive to High Ground

Some families in the Half Moon Bay area have driven to the intersection of Highways 92 and 35 to wait out the tsunami warning on high ground.

Our helicopter shows an orderly traffic pattern in the area, with cars and SUV's crowded in medians, shoulders and parking areas.

San Mateo County has issued the following warning:

A strong earthquake has struck the Pacific Ocean and a Tsunami Warning is now in effect for California.  These dangerous waves or tidal surges are expected to reach the San Mateo County between 7:30 and 8:00 AM Pacific Standard/Daylight Time.  Tsunami waves may come ashore for several hours. 
 
All beaches and low lying coastal areas should be evacuated immediately.  
  
•Low-lying areas west of Highway 1,  move to high ground east of the highway .  
•Linda Mar area of Pacifica, evacuate to the east of Adobe Drive.  
•El Granada, evacuate to the east of Coronado Street  
 
If possible, leave the coast.  Law enforcement personnel will direct you.   If you have no other place to go, evacuation shelters are being established at: 
 
-Terra Nova High School
-Oceana High School
-Farallone View Elementary School
-Pescadero High School
