Group Run Down on Walnut Creek Sidewalk

The Walnut Creek police department is investigating a fatal accident on Main Street near Parkside Drive.

A horrible scene played out on the streets of downtown Walnut Creek Saturday night.

Witnesses said a group was walking on a sidewalk off Main Street when a speeding truck jumped off the roadway and on to the sidewalk hitting them.

Witnesses said a woman was thrown 30 to 40 feet into the air on impact. A second person was also seriously injured.

The body of an adult female could be seen in the middle of Main Street covered in a yellow tarp.

The second person was first described as a child, but police said the second victim is an adult female.

This all happened around 6:30 p.m.  in front of the entrance to the Marriott Hotel.

The red truck crashed immediately after hitting the two women. A photo published in the Contra Costa Times showed the truck jammed between a light pole and a brick wall just across the street from the dead body. It's roof was cut off by emergency officials in order to get to the driver.

The driver was injured and taken to the hospital, according to police.  Lt. Lanny Edwards told Bay City News the driver of the vehicle, Hossein Tabrizi, 53, has been arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter.

The crash closed Main Street for several hours. Anyone with information on this collision should call Walnut Creek police at (925) 943-5844.
