Fatal Accident Team Called to Corvette Crash on Berkeley's Tunnel Road

The fatal accident team from the Berkeley police department was called out Friday morning when a silver Corvette crashed in an apparent drunk driving accident causing Tunnel Road to close during the investigation.

Public Information Officer Jennifer Coats said in a statement that the 21-year-old male driver fled the scene, but was later found, and arrested on charges of felony hit-and-run and driving under the influence.

Police said the passenger, a 24-year-old man, suffered significant injuries and was taken to the hospital where he was listed in critical condition. Still, Coats said because of the injuries he sustained, the Fatal Accident Investigation Team was called in to survey the scene.

The solo-vehicle crash was reported at 2:20 a.m. on the eastbound side of Tunnel between Alvarado Road and The Uplands.

NBC Bay Area's helicopter flew over the scene about 7 a.m. showing major damage to the Corvette.

Eastbound Tunnel Road was expected to be closed for hours. Drivers were advised to find alternate routes from state Highway 24 to state Highway 13.
