The Harlem Globetrotters are in town for three games this weekend, and a couple of them have planned a special outing in San Francisco today.
TNT Maddox, the first woman Globetrotter in nearly 20 years, is visiting The Hamlin School, an all-girls school in San Francisco, this afternoon to tell her story, Globetrotters spokesman Eric Nemeth said.
Maddox's teammate Handles Franklin was scheduled to join her to help demonstrate some of their basketball skills, Nemeth said.
"Since 2012 marks the 40th anniversary of the passage of Title IX, it is wonderfully auspicious for the school to welcome TNT," Head of School Wanda Holland Greene said.
The visit is meant to highlight the Globetrotters' "C.H.E.E.R. for Character" program. The program stresses cooperation, healthy mind and body, effort, enthusiasm and responsibility, Nemeth said.
Title IX requires that schools that receive federal funding provide equal opportunities for male and female students to participate in programs, including sports.
The Globetrotters will be playing twice on Saturday, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., at the Oracle Arena in Oakland and again on Monday at 1 p.m. at HP Pavilion in San Jose.
