Fewer Landlords Accepting Pets in San Francisco

Hundreds of people are giving up their pets in San Francisco due to a growing number of landlords not accepting four-legged family members.

Colette Nataf recently moved to San Francisco with her dog, Sammie, and finding a landlord to accept her dog was difficult.

Nataf said landlords asked to see her dog and interact with her pet. She eventually found a dog-friendly apartment -- something that is getting tougher to find in San Francisco.

"We're seeing a lot of people getting evicted from their homes and when they get evicted they are having a tough time finding pet-friendly housing," said Krista Maloney, San Francisco SPCA.

The San Francisco SPCA is seeing a lot of people being forced to surrender their dogs and cats.

"Since last March we've handled 207 cases which is quite a lot we're seeing almost half of those coming from the Mission District," Maloney said.

The SPCA said that pet owners should have their dogs or cats written into their lease agreement, just in case the building changes ownership.

For Abel Villca, giving up his dog is not an option.

"If I had to choose between leaving my dog or stay here, I'd keep my dog and go somewhere else where it's more pet friendly," he said.
