Fire Breaks Out Along East Bay Railroad

Fire crews rushed to eastern Contra Costa County Thursday afternoon after several spot fires broke out along a railroad track in Oakley.

Louis Brochard with the Contra Costa County fire department said at least one structure was lost in the early minutes following the fire and several more were threatened for a time.

There were at least 3 fires reported along a long strip of track around 2 p.m. Thursday.

Helicopters over the scene showed the fire spreading quickly on both sides of the track.  A large backhoe next to the burned structure also caught fire and put up a big plume of black smoke.

The cause of the fire was not known, but because it happened along a railroad track it is suspected something on a train sparked the fire.

Both aerial and ground crews from CalFire and local departments attacked the fire and were able to bring it under control in about an hour.
