A sausage factory that operated for decades in San Francisco's Bayview District sustained significant structural damage in a two-alarm fire Wednesday afternoon, fire officials said.
The fire at Evergood Fine Foods at 1389 Underwood Ave. broke out just before noon and it took more than 90 minutes for firefighters to bring the blaze under control.
As crews were fighting the fire, the battalion chief at the scene expressed concern that the roof might collapse, fire spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said.
While that hasn't happened yet, the building sustained significant structural damage and likely will be declared uninhabitable, according to the fire department. No injuries were reported in the blaze.
Firefighters expect to remain at the scene into the evening hours to make sure that no flames spark in the charred rubble, fire officials said.
Evergood Fine Foods moved to Underwood Avenue in 1966, 40 years after opening the "Evergood Pork Store" in San Francisco's Mission District, according to the company's website.Its products are sold in stores nationwide.
The company has made sausages for more than 80 years.
