Firefighters Battle 2-Alarm Fire at San Jose Powersports Dealership; About 70 Vehicles Destroyed

About 70 vehicles were destroyed in a two-alarm fire at a powersports dealership in San Jose Sunday evening, fire officials said.

Fire crews responded to a report of a fire at G.P. Sports at 15050 Camden Ave. in the city's Cambrian Park neighborhood around 5:05 p.m.

Minutes after a fire broke out at the Yamaha repair shop, thick, black smoke poured out and flames shot into the air.

"You could see flames inside the building," witness Brian Adamson said.

A man, who identified himself as Rob, said he was the first to call 911.

"It went from a little bit of smoke, you know, like from a cold morning, to just the whole thing to crazy smoke," Rob said.

The blaze at the powersports dealership was under control about an hour later, according to fire officials.

Firefighters were able to save nearly a dozen vehicles, fire officials said.

The dealership carries new and used motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, utility vehicles and watercrafts by Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Sea-Doo, according to the distributor's website.

No injuries were reported.

There were 50 firefighters who assisted in battling the blaze, fire officials said. They faced challenges beyond the flames.

"Some of the challenges we faced were, one, the building was very well-secured, we had bars on the windows. The other challenge that we faced was the closest fire hydrant was so far away on this busy street of Camden Avenue that it took us a long time for us to lay line in order to get the water supply to the pumping engine," San Jose Fire Cpt. Reggie Williams said.

The fire hydrant was about 1,000 feet away from the burning building.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
