Firefighters Preparing for Possible Busy Fire Season

Firefighters are bracing for the possibility of a very busy fire season.

On Friday, at least 10 acres burned in Napa County and threatened homes.

"We're starting to see more starts and we're going to start to balance out with potentially what we saw last year, which was a very historic fire season for us," said Jim Crawford, a Cal Fire division chief.

Crawford said right now at least five fires are burning in the region, including fires in Kern, Amador and Monterey counties.

Cal Fire has already deployed at least five engines and a helicopter to assist, and there's fear the scorching temperatures settling in on the southwest could strain resources.

"We really start to see an increase in calls from people that are ill from heat illness, and that takes our resources that are the same firefighting resources," Crawford said.

Add that to a drought-stricken landscape, firefighters warn the potential for catastrophe is real.
