The first of two rounds of strong rain dumped down on the Bay Area Wednesday, causing flight cancellations, downed trees and heavy traffic.
Dozens of flights at San Francisco International Airport were canceled or delayed due to the wet weather.
The airport during the morning had seen 82 cancellations, including 39 departures and 43 arrivals, airport duty manager Larry Mares said.
Meanwhile in the South Bay, power lines went down in Los Altos after a 30-foot tree fell. The large evergreen snapped at its trunk and crashed through a wooden fence and onto North El Monte Avenue around 7:30 a.m.
No injuries were reported from the incident, which caused a power outage in the immediate area.
The wet weather forced many Bay Area residents to stay indoors on Wednesday. Anusha Philip was not one of them. She walked her dog in the rain along Santana Row in San Jose.
"The rain is refreshing," Philip said. "We need it."
Others used the weather to their advantage, especially surfers looking for an adrenaline rush and big waves.
Surfer and San Francisco-resident Jarl Maeghers said the stormy sea is what he has been waiting for.
"It's amazing, you can taste the electricity," he said.
Showers and gusty winds -- up to 25 to 45 mph -- are expected to last until Thursday morning. The second storm is expected to slam the California coastline Friday morning.
Friday's storm is expected to be stronger with heavier rain totals. Showers will linger through Saturday.
