FlightCar Launches at San Jose Airport

"The Airbnb for cars" is live at the San Jose airport.

Leave your car with a stranger at the airport, and have them drive it around while you're out of town.

Really -- it works.

That's the idea behind FlightCar, which went live at Mineta San Jose International Airport recently, according to SiliconValley.com.

FlightCar, which the news source described as "the Airbnb for cars," is a San Francisco startup that's seeking to cash in on the much-vaunted "sharing economy."

Leaving your car in the care of someone else and having them to pay for the privilege is a good enough idea to attract investment from the likes of GGV Capital, which invested $13.5 million in FlightCar last year, the news source reported.

FlightCar is live at "San Francisco and Oakland," and users can rent a car for up to $30 a day.

Dropping off the car is free for users, so the free parking is an immediate attraction. Then, if a renter drives the car more than 225 miles, there's a surcharge of 45 cents per mile -- 40 cents of which go to the owner of the car, according to the Web site.

The company also covers all of the insurance, according to the Web site.
