While NFL games played out across the country Sunday, former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick was in Beverly Hills receiving an honor.
Kaepernick was recognized at the ACLU of Southern California's annual Bill of Rights dinner.
The crowd gave him a standing ovation after he surprised them by simply showing up. He was not on the star-studded list of honorees released before the banquet. It's not clear why his planned award wasn't publicly revealed before the event.
Kaepernick spoke briefly to the supportive crowd.
Other people honored at the event were Jane Fonda, Viola Davis and Judd Apatow.
