Former Raider To Stand Trial For Four Murders

Former defensive lineman connected to SoCal killing spree.

Former Oakland and Los Angeles Raider Anthony Wayne Smith will stand trial for four murders in Los Angeles County, according to reports.

Smith played for the Raiders for eight years in the 1990s. But afterwards Smith, 45, committed killings in "a nine-year spree," according to the Contra Costa Times.

"He quickly went from terrorizing quarterbacks to a life of very real violence," the newspaper reported.

Smith is no stranger to murder trials: a jury deadlocked 8-4 in favor of guilt after Smith was charged and tried for the 2008 murder of Maurilio Ponce in April, the newspaper reported. While waiting for a retrial, Smith was charged with four other killings.

His attorneys say that there is "no DNA evidence, no fingerprints evidence, no ballistics evidence" to connect Smith to the killings.

He will be back in court on Oct. 29, the newspaper reported.
