Driver Shot Dead On I-580, Eastbound Lanes Blocked

A man was shot dead and crashed while driving on Interstate Highway 580 in Richmond Saturday afternoon, leaving the roadway's eastbound lane's blocked, according to a California Highway Patrol Officer.

Witnesses reported seeing shots fired from a vehicle into a blue Ford SUV around 12:40 p.m. on eastbound Highway 580 near Regatta Boulevard, according to CHP Officer Sean Wilkenfeld.

The SUV crashed into the roadway's center divider and overturned, and officers arrived to find the driver dead at the scene, Wilkenfeld said.

A description of the suspect vehicle and possible suspects was not available.

All eastbound lanes around the scene of the crash have been blocked while Richmond police and CHP officers collect evidence.

There was no estimated time for reopening as of 2:15 p.m. and drivers are advised to use alternate routes and expect delays.
