George Lucas' Marin Low Income Housing Plan Suffers Setback

Lucas' low income housing plan on Grady Ranch loses partner

Filmmaker George Lucas' plans to build affordable housing on the Marin County Grandy ranch where he originally proposed erecting a film studio have suffered a setback.

The community foundation that was partnering with Lucas on the housing plan announced on Thursday that it had pulled out of the project, siting uncertainties in state and federal financing.

Thomas Peters, CEO of the Marin Community Foundation told the Marin IJ, "Though often and remarkably left out of most community debates about affordable housing, the central challenge of financing is a first-tier topic in determining what can actually be built."

According to the Marin Independent Journal, Lucas spokesman Angelo Garcia said in a statement that the Star Wars creator would continue seeking a developer willing to move ahead with the project.

Last year Lucas abandoned plans to build a huge film studio on his ranch in the face of opposition from neighbors and opted for a low income housing project instead.

Lucas had approval for the project back in 1996, but when the project actually moved forward years later neighbors threatened to sue and Lucas walked away from the studio idea.
