Gerard Butler arrives on the red carpet in a standard tux. Expected and traditional, but it still works.

Hollywood filmmaker Curtis Hanson, who has directed such films as "L.A. Confidential" and "8 Mile" is gearing up for his new film about the late legendary surfer Jay Moriarty and his quest to ride the iconic Northern California surf known as the Mavericks.

Gerard Butler has signed on (replacing a rumored Sean Penn) to portray Moriarty's mentor, Rick "Frosty" Hesson, reports Variety.

Moriarty died in 2001 during a diving accident in the Maldive Islands, but his life's story is an inspiration to surfers everywhere who "Live like Jay."

No word yet on when filming begins.
