Giants Use Group Effort to Get Past D'Backs

On a sunny day at AT&T Park, one player tripped on dugout steps, another tripped on a bullpen mound, there was a beer explosion in the stands, and a pop-up hit an infielder on the shoulder. Oh, Buster Posey also somehow threw a ball into Jake Peavy’s glove with Peavy looking the other way.

It was a strange day at the yard, but the box score certainly looked nice and normal to manager Bruce Bochy. His bullpen came up big and a resilient lineup got a couple more huge hits as the Giants beat the Diamondbacks 4-2.

Peavy worked around trouble throughout his short day. He gave up two singles in the first but no runs. In the fourth, he allowed a double and then three consecutive singles with no outs. But he buckled down, getting three straight outs to limit the damage to two runs.

Grant Green put the Giants back on top in the bottom of the inning, smoking a two-run shot to left.

Another unlikely contributor made it 4-2 after six. Ruben Tejada lined a double to the wall in left, driving in Gregor Blanco, who had walked.

Starting pitching report: Peavy was charged with two earned in 4 1/3 innings. He finished the first half with a 5.09 ERA and 1.45 WHIP, numbers that look much better when you realize the ERA was up at 8.21 after a start on May 20.

Bullpen report: It is worth noting that Albert Suarez pitched the seventh inning of a two-run game. It is also worth noting that he threw a fastball past Paul Goldschmidt after an error extended the inning.

At the plate: Green’s homer was his first since last August and the fourth of his career. He has more homers for the Giants then he did for the A’s, who picked him 13th overall in 2009.

In the field: Brandon Crawford once again showed off his incredible footwork, robbing Jake Lamb of a hit in the fifth by ranging into right field and somehow getting himself into position to fire a throw back to Brandon Belt.

Attendance: The Giants announced a crowd of 41,571 human beings, including a woman who lost her beers when she inexplicably tried to catch a foul ball with a tray holding her beers.

Up next: The final game of MLB’s first half is Madison Bumgarner vs. Archie Bradley.
