Schwarzenegger, 61, says he and Democrats have made progress in creating a new budget plan.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says he hopes to strike a budget deal with Democratic leaders before Christmas to help tackle the state's $42 billion shortfall.

Schwarzenegger said Monday he and Democrats are making progress on an $18 billion proposal that was passed without Republican support.

The governor had said he planned to veto the bills because they failed to meet his demand for an economic recovery plan.

Taxpayer groups have threatened to sue if the governor signs the budget plan.

They say it violates the state Constitution because it would raise taxes without a two-thirds vote in the Legislature.

The governor says he will meet with Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg and Assembly Speaker Karen Bass on Tuesday to continue negotiations.

  • Marianne Monday, Dec 22 at 8:31 PM FLAG COMMENT I asked the Govenor why he doesn't triple the moving violations on the freeways, triple the fines for speeding and driving in the carpool lanes when you aren't supposed too. Then he can make the State money, save lives and maybe get people to slow down. And fine people who don't register their vehicles in time. No response from him LOL>

  • Cindy Monday, Dec 22 at 1:03 PM FLAG COMMENT Why doesn't the Governor stop treating the state work force as pawns? The average State worker makes less than his staff in a given month. The Legislature should feel ashamed for having giving them selves raises in the past.
