Firefighters battled a grass fire in the hills near Walnut Creek Friday afternoon.

The fire was reported at 4:10 p.m. near Marshall and El Verano  drives. As of about 4:45 p.m. it was still burning out of control and Cal  Fire was responding to help.

The good news was that initially no structures were threatened.  One resident who lives near the fire line said it looked like the fire was burning away from homes thanks to the wind.

The fire is in an open space south of John Muir Medical Center and can bee seen by drivers on Highway 24 and 680.

There were also fires reported in Hayward along 880 and in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
