Great Pumpkin Weigh Off Breaks Record

Napa is known for its grape growing, but today pumpkins were king of the vine

You know it's autumn when Half Moon Bay hosts its annual pumpkin weigh-off.

This morning's event was one for the record books.

The first pumpkin was weighed before 7 a.m. and the winner was declared about four hours later.

The winning pumpkin was grown by Leonardo Urena from Napa. And his gourd broke the former record by nearly 50 pounds. Urena's pumpkin weighed in at 1,704 pounds.  The old record was 1,658 pounds.

For that, he gets $10,224. That's $6-per-pound plus an extra $1,000 for growing the biggest one.

Urena  told reporters after his big win that he wanted to go home, hug his family and eat some pumpkin pie.  He has come in second and third in other weigh-offs, but this is Urena's first win.  He said the difference was planting a week earlier and on an entire new patch of ground on his employers Napa field.

The winning pumpkin will be on display this weekend at the 41st annual Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival.
