The San Mateo County coroner has identified a man who authorities found dead in a car as 50-year-old Gonzalo Martinez-Hernandez, of East Palo Alto.
Authorities responded to a call at around 9 a.m. from a motorist who stopped to take pictures next to state Route 35, about a mile south of state Route 92, and saw a possible vehicle about 80 feet down an embankment, Redwood City CHP spokesman Art Montiel said.
When they arrived at the vehicle, authorities discovered the dead body of a man in the rear of the car near the hatchback, Montiel said.
There were no obvious signs of foul play, so authorities are handling the incident as a collision at this time.
One theory is that Hernandez survived the crash and was trying to get out of the back hatch when he died.
