Gymnast Home to Face Sex Charges

A former world-class gymnast from Bulgaria faces two felony statutory rape charges for allegedly sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl he trained in Fremont 10 years ago.

Kaloyan Kaloyanov, 36, was arraigned in Alameda County Superior Court last week and is scheduled to return to court on Thursday to be assigned an attorney and possibly enter a plea.

According to court records, the girl told police in 2002 that Kaloyanov raped her twice, once in the fitness center of her family's condominium complex in Fremont and once in Manhattan Beach in Southern California while she was there for a competition. The girl said both incidents occurred in 2000.

Fremont police questioned Kaloyanov in 2002, but he fled the country before he could be arrested.

He was on the Fremont Police Department's "Most Wanted" list for many years and was finally arrested on a cruise ship in Mexico earlier this month.

Authorities said Kaloyanov had been a fitness instructor on several different cruise ships, and this summer he was managing a hair salon on a ship.

He's being held in the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin in lieu of $500,000 bail.

Kaloyanov participated in several world championship events, including the Aerobic Gymnastics World Championships.

Locally, he participated in the World Sportaerobic Championship in San Francisco in 2001.
