Palo Alto's Happy Donuts Closes Its Doors

On National Doughnut Day, Palo Alto mainstay closes its doors

After today, Palo Alto is a little sadder.

Happy Donuts is gone.

The last day at the well-known donut shop -- one of the only places in Palo Alto that's open 24 hours a day -- is today, National Donut Day, with the closing time of 10 p.m. the last call for the El Camino Real donut shop.

Palo Alto Online reports that the news broke on Wednesday for stunned donut-seekers, who found out that the owners lost their lease with the landlord.

Stanford and high school students cramming for exams were familiar with the space, the newspaper reported, with many a late-night chemistry session held over a donut and coffee.

The donut shop has a second location in San Jose, but for now, the only late-night dining option in Palo Alto is a Subway on University Avenue.
