One of Interpol’s 10 most wanted fugitives, a man charged with murdering his wife in their Montreal apartment, was apparently hiding in the Bay Area.
Harinder Singh was wanted for the 2007 murder of his wife, 29-year-old Gurpreet Kaur. Authorities say, following his July 2 arrest at his home in Fremont, the wheels are in motion to send the fugitive back to Canada.
In a statement released Wednesday afternoon, Montreal police explained the arrest was made possible by information received on June 26 that indicated Singh could be living near San Francisco.
Charged with second-degree murder, Singh, now 36, was one of the 10 most wanted criminals in Quebec. A Canada-wide warrant was issued for his arrest in 2008, court documents show.
Wednesday, Singh faced a federal judge in San Jose. It was a quick appearance. Singh waived extradition, to the surprise of his neighbors.
“It’s really shocking,” said Ankita Nawal, adding that he seemed like “a nice man.”

Singh, a native of India, was living at the Glenmills Apartments on Central Avenue. According to neighbors, he was living with a woman to whom they said he was married. Attempts to contact that woman were not immediately successful.
Prior to fleeing shortly after his wife's death, Singh dropped off his two young children at the home of a friend of the couple, ICI Radio-Canada reports. He pretended to return an hour later, but he never did.
The extradition details remain to be determined, but Singh is expected to return to Canada in handcuffs soon.
