Harvey Milk's Former Castro Camera Store Could Land on National Registry of Historic Places

The site of Harvey Milk's former Castro Camera store could be added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The current owner of the property will have to give permission to include it, said Megan Springate, who is working with the National Park Service to include more LGBT sites in the database, Monday at the GLBT Center in San Francisco.

According to Bay Area Reporter, if Castro Camera is added to the list, it will join just five other LGBT sites on the Registry, which currently has 90,540 total listings: New York's Stonewall Inn, Washington, DC's Dr. Franklin E. Kameny Residence, the James Merrill House in Stonington, CT, and Cherry Grove Community House and Theater and the Carrington House, both in Fire Island, NY.

The Victorian era property which housed Castro Camera and Harvey Milk's residence are located at 573-575 Castro Street. NoeHill reported that the storefront was built in 1894 and was both a retail shop and Milk's political headquarters from 1973-1978.
