Here's One Way to Steal Some Cash

Someone stole an ATM from a Monterey County liquor store overnight and police say the same thieves may be responsible for a similar crime in Morgan Hill.

The thieves didn't get very far though, after ditching their stolen vehicle and stolen money in a nearby ditch.

Investigators said two men backed a stolen Ford van in front of Tom's Liquor in Prunedale around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.  The store was closed at the time.

Surveillance video caught the duo strapping some ropes around the store's ATM. More straps and chains linked it to a bumper.  Once they put the foot on the gas pedal off they went.

Witnesses told police that the men then fled the scene on San Miguel Canyon Road toward a Chevron gas station where they apparently skidded off the road into an embankment before running away.

Police found the van with money lying across the front seat.  They also found the ATM and a crow bar inside.  The van was stolen in San Jose.

Police have made one arrest. Kevin Bazar, a 27-old-man from San Leandro, is in custody after police said they found him close to the crash scene.
