Hiker Killed in Santa Clara County Fall

The two hikers were climbing rocks off Pacheco Pass.

A hiker has died after falling off a cliff in remote Santa Clara County, authorities said Monday.

A companion of his also fell off the cliff, but survived the fall.

The two men, drove to the "Bell Station" area in unincorporated Santa Clara County at approximately 9 a.m. Sunday.

The pair began their hiking activities by climbing rocks and cliffs in the area.

Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the area around 4:40 p.m., on a report that the two hikers had fallen, said sheriff's Sgt. Jose Cardoza.

One of the hikers was found dead near the bottom of a cliff. The other man was taken to the hospital with major injuries. His condition is currently unknown.

The identies of both hikers are being witheld right now, but they were both men in their early twenties.
