House Near Oakland Children's Hospital Collapses

A home under construction in Oakland collapsed Thursday morning, according to the Oakland Fire Department.

The home at 854 46th St. collapsed sometime before the first call reporting the incident at 11:50 a.m., a fire department dispatcher said.

Battalion Chief Leon Primas said the first call to the fire department was a report of wires down in the area. But when fire crews arrived, they found a house had collapsed, he said.

Primas said the house fell under its own weight because the frame had become weak during a construction project.

He said a construction worker had been working close to the house when it fell. Primas said the worker suffered minor injuries that needed no medical attention and left the site before the fire department arrived.

He also said a family on one side of the house was displaced because PG&E had to shut off the gas and electricity to the family's home.

The family found lodging with family or friends.

Primas said the home was valued at $430,000 and is considered a total loss.
