Hundreds Attend Prayer Vigil in San Francisco Against Morality Clauses

SAN FRANCISCO - About 200 parents and students from Catholic high schools in the San Francisco Bay Area held a candlelight vigil Wednesday night outside St. Mary's Cathedral against morality clauses recently announced by the archbishop and in support of teachers.

Participants outside St. Mary's Cathedral held candles and signs that read ``Love One Another'' and ``Support our LGBT Youth.''

Several students are in their school uniform and many in the group have an ash cross on their foreheads. Ash Wednesday marks the start of the 40-day Lenten season of penitence and fasting.

Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone's statement outlines the church's teaching that using contraception is a sin and that sex outside of marriage, whether it is in the form of adultery, masturbation, pornography or gay sex, is ``gravely evil.''
