‘Hold On to Your Beliefs': Katrina Survivors Offer Advice for People in Path of Hurricane Patricia

Hurricane Patricia slamming into Mexico is a grim reminder of what thousands of people went through during Hurricane Katrina 10 years ago.

Katrina survivors know that people in Patricia's path are going through and how they will feel when it is all over.

For Sylvia and Johnnie Clark, watching Hurricane Patricia reach land along the coast of Mexico is painful to see. The two were in the eye of Hurricane Katrina when it hit New Orleans 10 years ago.

"We were sitting down watching the new with my son, and that's when we knew our house was gone," Johnnie Clark said.

The Clark's home was located in New Orleans' 7th Ward, a place they called home their entire life. Hurricane Katrina changed their lives forever.

"We had no money," Johnnie Clark said. "You couldn't use your debit car because the storm had destroyed everything."

Emergency management experts said the first thing people need following a natural disaster is monetary help, because it is not known what people may need during a crisis.

For those in the eye of Hurricane Patricia, the Clarks send this message: "I would get people right now to stick together, to hold on to your belief," Sylvia Clark said. "Come as one. You can make it through."
