In Tech-Rich SF, 1 in 4 Go Hungry As Food Pantries Go Empty

Amidst record wealth, widespread want

The rents are high and the economy is flush -- but over 100,000 people are going hungry.

Twenty-eight percent of San Francisco's over 810,000 residents are going hungry, according to a pair of reports released on Wednesday.

That's how many residents earn less than 200 percent of the federal poverty level, according to the San Francisco Business Times.

Food banks are still empty as well, the San Francisco Examiner reported on Monday.

A family of three needs a household income of $73,000 to make ends meet in San Francisco, city officials said. Anything less mean cutting the budget -- or cutting out meals.

Meanwhile, with Thanksgiving days away, the San Francisco food bank is short 800 turkeys, the newspapers reported -- and in Alameda, food banks are short 4,000 turkeys, hams and chickens.
