Infamous Ship Headed to Golden Gate

One of the most infamous cruise ships in the world is about to sail under the Golden Gate.

The Examiner is reporting the Carnival Splendor will soon dock at Pier 70 for final repairs following an engine fire that disabled the ship mid-cruise last November.

The Splendor left Long Beach on Nov. 7 with nearly 4,500 people aboard headed to the Mexican Riviera. One morning early in the cruise an engine caught fire and knocked out power.

The ship was left adrift 200 miles outside San Diego.  It took several days to tow everyone back to land. During those days passengers were forced to live with no air conditioning, no phones, no cooked food and at times no toilets.

Splendor had been docked in San Diego ever since, but apparently needs even more work that can only be done in the City.  Port of San Francisco Executive Director Monique Moyer told the paper the ship will generate thousands of hours of work for port employees.

The ship is expected to be quite a sight along the City’s waterfront for about a month while repairs are made.  It supposed to arrive next Saturday.
