Family and friends of Calvin Riley on Thursday night held a vigil for the 20-year-old who was shot and killed last weekend in San Francisco as he and a friend played Pokemon Go.
Dozens gathered at St. Gregory Catholic Church in San Mateo to say goodbye to Riley, a promising pitcher at Serra High School who was pursuing his baseball dreams at Delta College in Stockton.
A private service preceded the vigil, and a funeral Mass is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at St. Gregory.
Riley's godmother, Kim Swift, said "it's not fair" that he's gone so soon.
"It's tragic, the worst nightmare anybody should go through," she said. "I just can't believe it. He's been wanting me to come visit; this should not be the way I have to come."
Riley's former Serra teammates said he was gifted on and off the field.
"He brought joy to the team," said Michael Valdes. "He lit up the clubhouse, lit up the dugout, always positive."

A GoFundMe page set up to help Riley's family pay for funeral expenses has collected more than $70,000, exceeding its goal of $65,000.
Meanwhile, no suspects have been identified in the shooting that occurred about 10 p.m. Saturday at Aquatic Park. Investigators with the U.S. Park Police continue to search for clues.
