SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Northern California officials are reviewing jail security a week after a suspected child molester overpowered his single guard and escaped from custody.
Johnell Carter remains on the lam after his escape while on an out-of-jail visit to a medical clinic Mar. 6 and the the Mercury News reported Friday that jail officials are reviewing security procedures.
Carter was handcuffed and shackled at the waist when he fought with his guard outside the clinic. The guard suffered a shoulder injury. A manhunt of more than 50 law enforcement officials and a police helicopter failed to find Carter.
Carter is described as 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs 220 pounds. His head is shaved and he has a tattoo on the left side of his neck that says "AMY" as well as a tattoo that says "Johnell Jr." on his upper left arm. Officials had earlier reported the name was "Alice."
Carter was arrested a year ago and charged with sexually abusing a young relative. He was classified as a minimum security inmate, which means he woudl have been guarded by a single deputy when taken outside court. Silicon Valley Crime Stoppers are offering a reward of up to $3,000 for information that leads to Carter’s arrest.
