Jimmy Garoppolo Joins Montana, Young in 49ers' Win Over Arizona

Through many of the 49ers' first nine games, San Francisco could rely on a dominant defense and impressive running game. On Sunday, the game came down to Jimmy Garoppolo's right arm.

The well-paid QB came through. Outside of two frustrating interceptions -- a pattern that has set 49ers Twitter ablaze -- Jimmy G picked apart Arizona's defense. His 25-yard game-winning touchdown pass to running back Jeff Wilson Jr. with only 31 seconds left was the cherry on top of a historic performance in San Francisco's 36-26 victory.

Garoppolo completed 34 of 45 pass attempts for a career-high 424 passing yards, four passing touchdowns and two interceptions. He became the third 49ers quarterback in franchise history to pass for at least 400 yards and four touchdowns in the same game, joining Hall of Famers Joe Montana and Steve Young.

"He did a hell of a job," Shanahan said of Garoppolo after the win. "Really played unbelievable."

Prior to Garoppolo's performance Sunday, Young last accomplished the feat on Nov. 28, 1993, in a 35-10 win over the Rams. He threw for 462 yards with four TDs and one interception in the blowout win.

The lefty led the NFL with 29 passing touchdowns that season, but also tossed 16 interceptions.

Garoppolo now has 18 passing TDs this season with 10 interceptions. He's on pace for 29 touchdowns and 16 interceptions ... or Young's exact stat line from 26 years ago.
