Jury Wants Bay Area Cop Killer to Die

Alvarez convicted of killing East Palo Alto police officer

An East Palo Alto cop killer could become the first person sentenced to death in Northern California in four years.

Jurors in San Mateo County have recommended death for Alberto Alvarez, saying he showed no remorse for the 2006 shooting death of officer Richard May.

After four days of deliberation, jurors found Alverez guilty citing Alvarez's criminal past, including drug and weapon charges.

A judge will formally sentence Alvarez in February. Alvarez's lawyer says the case will go to automatic appeal, but that process could take 10 to 15 years.

Convicted killer Scott Peterson was the last person to be sentenced to death in San Mateo County Superior Court after he was found guilty in 2004 of murdering his wife and unborn child.
