“Last Black Man in San Francisco” Examines a Changing Hometown

Jimmie Fails wants to tell his life story about feeling alienated and left out in his rapidly changing hometown.

With the help of Joe Talbot, who has been Fails' friend and documentarian since junior high, he has for several years been working on a movie concept called "Last Black Man in San Francisco."

A Kickstarter campaign aims to raise $50,000 to finance the film. As of this writing, 132 backers have pledged a total of $8,925.

"Every dollar raised gets us one step closer to telling a story that frankly wouldn't otherwise get told," Talbot said in the campaign video.

"But this isn't just a story for black people or for people who lost their homes," Fails said in the video. "It's a universal story for anybody that feels like an outsider in their hometown."
