Lawrence Berkeley National Lab Opens Solar Energy Research Center

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab is opening a new solar research center on Tuesday.

The nearly 40,000 square-foot Solar Energy Research Center will house facilities for the development of a solar fuel generator.

β€œWe believe the opening of this building will provide a significant boost to solar fuels research,” says Berkeley Lab Director Paul Alivisatos. β€œIt puts our researchers, from various disciplines, together in a single space, close to UC Berkeley and Berkeley Lab colleagues studying similar challenges.”

Researchers say their goal is to build a prototype solar fuel system that is 10 times more efficient that what is currently available.
