Students at San Jose’s Leland High on Tuesday will be wearing black to remember an 11th-grade athlete who died on the track and had a history of asthma according to a coach.
“Unfortunately today we lost a beloved Charger,” the school tweeted on Monday. “Our thoughts go out to Tristan Nguyen and his family. He will be dearly missed. Rest in Peace.”
San Jose Unified District spokesman Jorge Quintana said Tristan collapse Monday afternoon. But the teen died despite efforts of his coach, Dan Llloyd, who performed CPR on him. It's unclear what role, if any, asthma played.
Tristan was a footbally player and was also was a discus thrower on the track team.
On social media, people who knew him well, and those who hardly knew him, wished his family well and added the hashtag #RIPTristan.
"So sad to hear this tragic death," Andy Nickel tweeted.
"I didn't know you well, but I do know that God gained one heck of an angel," Trinity Drummond tweeted.

Kassandra Le said Tristan was "really funny" and a "nice person well loved by a lot of people."
Sophomore Emily Yeh said she didn't know Tristan well, but feels touched by how her school community is reacting to his death. "Honestly, it was such a great way to see the school come together and just bond over a terrible tragedy."
