Lyft Drivers to Deliver 4,500 Backpacks, Supplies to 80 Oakland Schools

With the 2016-2017 school year quickly approaching, drivers from the ride-sharing business Lyft will deliver 4,500 backpacks with school supplies to 80 schools Wednesday, according to Oakland Unified School District officials.

Eighty volunteer drivers were scheduled to pick up the backpacks at 9 a.m. at the Oakland Technology Exchange Warehouse at 1680 14th St.

The drivers, in their pink-mustached vehicles, were then slated to deliver the packs and supplies to various school campuses across the city, school district officials said.

The event was created by the Oakland Ed Fund and Lyft in an effort to supply students in need with the essential tools needed to be successful in school.

"We appreciate them giving our students a much needed lift," Superintendent Antwan Wilson said in a statement.
