Even for the most occasional lottery player, the Mega Millions ticket is a must buy this week.
No one hit all the Mega numbers Tuesday night and that means Friday night's drawing will reach a whopping $304 million.
For the record, the winning numbers were 14, 1, 53, 50 and 35, with a Mega number of 43.
The $304 million jackpot will be the sixth largest of all time. Mega Millions has been rolling over ever since Feb. 4 when it started at the $12 million minimum.
The record is $390 million. That pot was shared by a New Jersey couple and a truck driver in Georgia in 2007.
For the novice, here's how to play: Tickets cost $1. Players pick numbers from two separate pools of numbers: five numbers from 1 through 56, then a single number from 1 to 46. The winning ticket has to match all six numbers.
The reason the jackpot gets so large is that we share it with several other states. Besides California, the Mega Millions game is played in Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Texas, Virginia and Washington.
