The Waterfront Gets a Makeover

Goodbye rotting piers, hello lawn!

The waterfront is getting a facelift, reports the Examiner.

The area between the Bay Bridge and AT&T Park at the end of Brannan Street will become the site of a park and a 830-foot public wharf covered in grass, replacing the unsafe existing pier.

All wooden structures affilated with Pier 36 will be demolished in order to make way for the new additions.

$6 million is tentatively earmarked for the project in a new federal budget, with additional funding coming from local sources and the sale of nearby land to condominiuim developers. The entire project will cost somewhere between $23.5 and $27.5 million to complete.

Construction bids are planned for next year, with a possible finished product as early as 2012.
