Man Arrested in Sexual Assault of Girl at 99-Cent Store Has History of Similar Crime: Sheriff

A 33-year-old man arrested in connection to the sexuall assault of an 8-year-old girl at a 99-cent store is a high-risk sex offender who had recently been released from prison after serving time for a similar offense, according to the Alameda County Sheriff's Office.

Carlyle Villazon is suspected of sexually assaulting the girl in the toy aisle of the 99-cent store on Sunday afternoon. Authorities said he ran from the store after the assault and was arrested late Wednesday after police released a sketch and surveillance pictures of the suspect.

Investigators were able to get a break in the case when an Oakland police officer checked the state's ankle bracelet tracking database of sex offenders.

Alameda County Sheriff's Office Sgt. J.D. Nelson said the tracking system showed Villazon, who was wearing an ankle bracelet, in the area of the 99-cent store at the exact time the crime occurred.

Villazon was arrested Wednesday in Union City.

Alameda County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Ray Kelly said investigators will present the case to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office for charging on Friday morning and Villazon may be arraigned later in the day.

"We will be asking for a maximum sentence," Kelly said.

In 2010, Villazon was charged and later convicted for performing lewd acts on an 8-year-old girl at a San Leandro Walmart.

San Leandro police said that in the 2010 incident the girl was shopping with her family when she told her mother that her younger brother had disappeared and that she would go find him.

A short time later, the girl walked back to her mother in tears and told her that a man had touched her inappropriately. The girl stuck her hand down her pants to demonstrate what the man had done to her, police said.

The victim's mother immediately told Walmart staff of the incident and she and store employees parties began searching for the suspect inside the store.

Police said Villazon ultimately was chased down by two good Samaritans at the store who pinned him down to the ground until officers arrived and arrested him.

San Leandro police said at that time that Villazon wasn't a registered sex offender but he had a prior arrest history for traffic violations and making terrorist threats.
